What is unsettled cash?

Unsettled cash refers to funds that have been recently deposited into an account but have not yet been fully processed or cleared. This can happen in a few different situations:

  1. When a check is deposited into an account, it can take several business days (depending on the bank and the amount of the check) for the funds to fully clear and become available to withdraw.

  2. When a trade is made in a brokerage account, the proceeds of the sale may not immediately become available for use to buy more securities. These funds are considered unsettled until the trade has fully settled, which can take up to three days.

  3. In some cases, a bank may make a partial release of funds from a deposited check before the check has fully cleared. These partially available funds are considered unsettled until the entire check clears.

It's important to be aware of unsettled cash in your accounts, as it can impact your ability to withdraw or use those funds until they have fully cleared. Be sure to check with your bank or brokerage for their specific policies and time frames for clearing funds.
